The national park Rincon de la Vieja is 30 minutes away from Liberia city. It is a protected area with trails open to the public so visitors can enjoy a great combination of attractions on its trails.
The most popular trail is Las Pailas due to the fact that it combines a visit to a seasonal waterfall in the mid ways of the trail. This waterfall only has water during the green season, on other months it is just a matter of a rainy day.
Along the trail the secondary volcanic activity will be an enhance with the attractions like volcanic lagoon and its coloration due to volcanic minerals and activity. A sector with the water pots and mud pots also captures visitors attention and the steam vents that bring all the vapor from the ground are just a phenomenal mother nature show.
A hummed forest that surrounds this trail hosts a good number of giant trees like the strangle figs, kapok and ficus. These trees are a great food source to animals and during the fruiting season they become like a supermarket for the forest.
The park has a another trail called La Cangreja which is a waterfall visit. None the less, this is a visit that has to be coordinated in advance due to different timings and logistics.
Important note: trail to the active crater is closed due to volcanic activity.
